Leave it in the Pool!

On One Day, for One Hour all across the United States and other Countries over 6300 swimming athletes collectively participated in the 2010 Ted Mullin "Hour of Power" swim relay to support Sarcoma research. This relay is in honor of Carleton College swimmer Ted Mullin, who passed away in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer. Funds raised through this event support research at the University of Chicago into the causes and treatment of sarcoma in young people.

If you interested in supporting the Ted Mullin Fund for Pediatric Sarcoma Research please check out the link below.

Diving head first into Winter Training Plans

Whitman Swimmers have started preparing for our annual Winter Training Trip to Southern California. During the last part of Whitman's 4-week semester break from classes in January, the team will rendezvous in the L.A. area for some of the toughest training, and most fun bonding of the season. In addition to heightened training volumes and intensity, the trip offers us the opportunity to compete against teams outside of our region, which is especially important as we focus on becoming more nationally competitive.

And did I mention it's a lot of fun?!

Whitman Takes Second at the NWC Relays!

With a morning hindered by wrong turns and ferries, the Whitman swimmers adjusted nicely and placed a combined second overall with 112 points. As separate teams, the Men and the Women both placed third! We had very consistent swimming across the board and we look forward to our first dual meet on November 12th.

End of the Year Banquets

Last week we celebrated the end of the season!

We began the evening with a "dress to impress" swim team dinner.  After eating a fabulous meal, we handed out awards.  We had many awards this year, and the winners are listed below:

Most Improved:  Andrew Roehrig and Erin Kiskaddon
MVP:  Jamie Nusse and Charlotte Graham
Most Inspirational: Nick Hurlburt and Lauren Flynn
STL Superstar: Brian Wakefield, Katie Tackman, and Sara Behrens
Workout Warrior: Chris Bendix and Charlotte Graham
Land Shark: Nick Hurlburt and Lauren Flynn
New Misisonary: Adam Brayton, Kevin Dyer, and Libby Arnosti
Coach's Award: Matt Liedtke and Sidney Kohls
Oz Award: Nick Wood and Alyssa Bader

After our team banquet, we walked to the pool to marvel at the newest records on the record board.  Those athletes who broke the record then proceeded to sign the old one to be given to the previous school record holder.

Finally, after all our team festivities, we made our way to the Varsity Athletics Banquet where we made our presence very well known.  In addition to being the loudest and most enthusiastic team in the room, we also  made our appearance known in the awards; we had a team member nominated in every possible field!   Out of our nominations, Kevin Dyer was named the First Year Outstanding Performer and Jamie Nusse was  named the Outstanding Performer for the junior class.

Spring Fundraisers

Each off-season, Whitman swimmers come together to raise money for the next season's California trip. This year is no exception and we have had very successful fundraising this spring.

Thanks to all the parents, kids, and swimmers who attended our swim lesson and clinic!  Lessons are always fun because it's great to share what we do and love with others.  Thanks for helping us make them a success!

Our Spring Triathlon was also quite successful!  Thanks goes out to the racers, sponsors, and team members who  made this annual tradition a success!  (We'll see you triathletes in the fall!)

Coach Blomme gets the NWC Men's Coach of the Year!

Our head coach, Jenn Blomme, was awarded the Coach of the Year for the men's team at the Northwest Conference Championships.

This award is yet another sign of a rising program that is building strength.

Congratulations, Jenn!  Thanks for all your work!

What a Great Conference Meet!

This year's Northwest Conference Championship was a very close meet!  We had some great swims from both the men's and women's squads and we had one of the closest and highest Conference placings in Whitman's history.  With the men missing second place by a mere three points and the women missing third by one point, there is already a great deal of excitement in anticipation for next year's season and championship.

Check out the Whitman writeup on the meet at http://www.whitman.edu/content/swimming and enjoy the pictures that attempt to capture the excitement of the Conference meet!

Historic Victory for Whitman Men

Friday night was a great night for Whitman Swimming. Our last dual meet was celebrated with the men's team winning the meet by one point against NWC powerhouse, UPS, and a farewell and congratulations to the seniors for their accomplishments the past four years.

Our seniors, Kevin McCoy, Eric Molnar, Nick Hurlburt, Sidney Kohls, Jessie Neill, and Chelsea Klinger have been phenomenal assets to our team the past four years, and they will truly be missed for their dedication to the Whitman Swimming program and genuine enthusiasm and support for their teammates.

The men's victory Friday night was a testament to the power of team support. Every person on the team, both men's and women's contributed to our victory with fast swims, touching out competitors for fifth place, and loud cheering. It truly was a wonderful meet!

Congratulations on a great end to a terrific dual meet season!

See you all at Conference February 12-14 at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way!

Still Undefeated!

After exciting meets against Willamette and Lewis and Clark, and with two dual meets to go, both the men's and women's teams remain undefeated! Our 5-0 record is the best record in the history of Whitman Swimming.

California Training

We have returned from our fabulous California training trip! Our seven day trip was fortunately placed in the middle of two rainy weeks, and we had sunny skies every day. During this trip, we increased our yardage, our dryland, and our team bonding, and we participated in the Cal-Lutheran Relay Meet as well.
